Package contains approximately 750 Bio-Balls, each 1.5 inches in diameter. One cubic foot of 1.5" Bio Balls has a surface area of approximately 100 square feet. Bio balls are used in a wide spectrum of water filtration applications but primarily to facilitate the growth of beneficial bacteria so that toxic ammonia can be broken down into less harmful nitrates. Using bio balls for biological filtration of water is extremely advantageous for both freshwater & saltwater applications. Bio-balls are usually employed via a wet/dry or trickle filter. A wet/dry or trickle filter is a system in which water is allowed to pass over the bio balls where beneficial bacteria grows and interacts with toxic ammonia to produce less harmful nitrates. This “trickle effect” increases dissolved oxygen levels in the pond or aquarium and cleans or filters the water as the bio balls combine with organic waste to dissolve it. Bio balls are also used in hatcheries, tropical fish farms, koi ponds, waste water systems, cooling towers, and other commercial & industrial fish farm systems.
